Map Naming Conventions

To keep things consistent, the Warzone community has adopted a file name convention for maps.

If you are uploading a map to the Warzone website, it must be named

#c-mapname.wz

Where:

  • # is the number of players (excluding Scavengers)
  • mapname is the name of the map:
    • No spaces allowed - stick to letters, numbers and a few basic characters like _ and -
    • Must not exceed 35 characters in length
    • The name must be unique for your map
    • Easy way to make it unique is put a short version of your name in the mapname

Do not convert 8 or 4 player maps to 7/6/5/3 players and leave the name the same!

All maps should have a version number in them, until the final map is done.

Example map names

Some examples of map names from existing maps:

  • 2c-Mero_OvalTrap – a 2 player map, called "Oval Trap" and made by Merowingg. You can see a list of names for over 100 of his maps in the forums.
  • 4c-TheParadigm – a 4 player challenge map called "The Paradigm" by NoQ.
  • 9c-Ambulant– a 9 player map called Ambulant by tmp
  • 10c-DA-mlake-v1 – version 1 of a 10 player map called M(ultiplayer) Lake by duda (DA).

Those are some great maps, but for me the best naming convention is that used by Merowingg and Duda. By including a shortened form of their name in the filenames, it makes it very easy to spot other maps made by the same author. It also pretty much guarantees that the map filename is going to be unique.
