History of Warzone 2100
- Aubergine
draft - this needs tidying up and completing, but need to finish the subsections first (see sidebar)
Warzone was one of the first 3D RTS games ever released (need citation).
Warzone 2100 is the most popular open source RTS game on SourceForge, receiving about 10,000 weekly downloads (note: "Warkeys" is not a game!). Countless more downloads occur via bit torrent and Linux package managers.
There have been well over 100 releases of Warzone 2100 since its first demo release in 1999 by Pumpkin Studios.
Over the years, numerous groups, such as NEWST, Pumpkin-2 and The Warzone 2100 Project, have contributed countless hours to keeping Warzone 2100 alive and fresh. If their time had been on a commercial basis, it's estimated that the effort would have cost over $12million (as of June 2012). Pumpkin dev time estimated at 45 years, community dev time estimated at 235 years.
In ? the source code was released as open source, and in ? the license was extended to include the audio/visual assets as well.
