Westerly winds typically mean arriving or continuing fair weather and easterly winds usually indicate arriving or continuing unsettled weather.

"A wind from the south has rain in her mouth" – in latitudes above the Gulf of Mexico, southerly winds carries moisture from the Gulf and is likely to cause rain clouds.

A backing wind (changing direction in counter-clockwise manner) usually indicates deteriorating weather conditions.
