A brief history of Warzone releases on Windows, Linux and Mac. |
Introduction
Since 1999 there have been almost 200 releases (including developer snapshots). This page lists about 150 of the more widely used releases (demos, patches, alphas/betas and full releases) and provides links to the developer snapshots for the terminally inquisitive! There are still more releases not referenced here, such as the PlayStation releases.
I hope you find this list useful, it took ages to create! It's quite staggering how much effort has gone in to Warzone over the years by people donating their time to keep this fantastic game alive!

N.E.W.S.T. & Pumpkin-2
After the demise of Pumpkin Studios, a group of fans formed in to NEWST to continue development on the game. They made the following releases:
Version | Date | Release Notes | Download | Source Code |
---|---|---|---|---|
1.11 | Jun 11 2005 | Release Notes | Windows (updater) | |
1.12 Beta 1-7 | Release Notes | |||
1.12 Beta 9-16 | July 2005 | Release Notes | Windows (updater) |
A lot of documentation was also created during this phase: Warzone documentation (zip file).
Sourceforge & Berlios
It was decided to make Warzone multi-platform, adding Linux and Mac support, hence a sudden version numbering change:
Version | Date | Release Notes | Download | Source Code |
---|---|---|---|---|
(2.) 0.1 | Jun 11 2005 | All proprietary code removed | ||
(2.) 0.2 | Jun 26 2005 | Release Notes | Browse Downloads | |
(2.) 0.2.1 | Jul 16 2005 | Release Notes | Browse Downloads | tar file |
(2.) 0.2.2 | Jul 27 2005 | Release Notes | Browse Downloads | tar file |
(2.) 0.2.3 | Not released | Warzone 2100 project took over development | Not released | GitHub 2.0.2.3 |
Numerous "trunk" development snapshot releases were also made, spanning the (2.) 0.x branch through to the 2.2.x branch. These have not been listed here or in the next section, however you can download them from the GNA archive.
The Warzone 2100 Project
Finally, The Warzone 2100 Project took over and are still working on Warzone to this very day.
This list is in version order, not date order. For example, the dates for 3.0.0 releases are correct (2010).
If you click a "Browse Downloads" link and get something ending in .tar.gz or tar.bgz then the releases are no longer available (the file you see is the data used to make the releases so you can still build them if you have a build environment set-up).
Changes to the Javascript API have also been tracked since version 3.1 beta 1.
There have also been numerous "MASTER" releases - these are development snapshots to allow people to test out certain things that are being worked on prior to a formal beta release. These have not been listed above, but you can see a full list on the Warzone website.
Other branches
There are several other branches of Warzone at various stages of development:
- Legacy – A fork of Warzone 2100 3.1 beta 11 that intends to comply with 2.3.x balance while adding UI features that don't affect true gameplay, such as the improved map selector. It is intended to be an up-to-date program capable of compiling on most platforms, and may at some point in the near future lose compatibility with wz2100.net style addons.
- Redemption – DirectX-based engine, Windows only
- Portable – Aimed to bring Warzone to portable devices (inactive project)
The future?
The Warzone Project continue to develop Warzone 2100 and make new releases. A great deal of work has already been done on the 3.2 branch, including lots of extensions to the Javascript API and support for ECM Jammers.
