Plot Twist – Contingency |
|
|
The Concept
Campaigns are grouped in to "Series". Each series has a name (eg. the one developed by Pumpkin is called Deliverance).
Each series has 3 main campaigns, that follow some general theme (eg. the cams developed by Pumpkin are about The Project seeking pre-collapse artefacts). Each campaign should introduce a new primary enemy faction who the player will spend most of their time battling with during the campaign.
Each series also has a "Plot Twist" (for want of a better description) - a side-campaign that starts slightly before the timeline associated with the series, and runs up to roughly the end of the timeline of the series (hence the staggering in the images above).
The plot twist is a campaign in itself, and is created after the 3 main campaigns in the series so it allows us to:
- show the series from a different perspective / angle
- answer questions that the campaigns in the series overlooked or brushed under the carpet
- show what happens to factions before the player encounters them and after the player defeats them – build the canon around the other factions
- change allegiances between factions, and introduce new factions
- play with some new tech :)
- set us up for the next series
Just as Warzone has a huge tech tree, I believe the plot that ties all the campaigns / side plots together should also be on a large scale. There should be a general theme of consistency running through everything.
